Fight for $15

January 16, 2018

Last night, surrounded by business leaders, union workers, faith groups and fellow colleagues, Senator Rich Madaleno and I kicked off the Fight for $15 Campaign, a measure that would raise the state’s minimum wage to $15 by 2023.

This legislation would improve the lives of 570,000 Marylanders, 22% of our workforce, the majority of whom are full time workers, women and people of color. Nearly 40% of Marylanders affected are age 40 or older. This bill is about fairness and equity. It’s only fair that workers get paid a fair wage, especially in an era when corporate profits are at an all time high and wages have stagnated at a 65 year low.

A decent wage for a day’s work is at the very core of America's promise to its workers. We cannot foreclose on that promise at this time in our history, on our watch, in our state.

I am proud to be the primary House sponsor of this bill, along with Delegates Diana Fennell & Jeff Waldstreicher, and look forward to securing economic justice for some of our most vulnerable Marylanders.
