Maryland voters would like to have better access to public transit and safer, more convenient walking and biking options — and they want to see the state investing more money in these kinds of infrastructure projects.
Those are the results of a statewide poll recently commissioned by the Maryland chapter of the Sierra Club, the environmental group.
Support for these priorities is pretty much across the board in the state electorate — even in rural areas and from a significant portion of Republican voters.
The poll comes as lawmakers are preparing to consider legislation called the Transportation and Climate Alignment Act of 2025. The bill is set to have its first hearing in the Senate Budget and Taxation Committee on Wednesday morning.
Sponsored by Sens. Shelly Hettleman (D-Baltimore County) and Dawn Gile (D-Anne Arundel) in the Senate and by Del. Mark Edelson (D-Baltimore City) in the House, the legislation would require the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) to measure the greenhouse gas emissions of all major projects in the state’s six-year capital transportation budget and determine if the overall budget aligns with the state’s goals to cut climate pollution.
